In the year, 1987, Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church was founded by Dr. Joseph Randolph Richardson in San Francisco California, directly next door to the El Bethel Missionary Baptist Church on Golden Gate Avenue. Pastor Richardson, his wife, Sister Zeora Bea Moore-Richardson, their family, and a host of other souls, organized what was to become a vibrant and blessed addition to the Body of Christ. As God would have it, the newly formed church family voted unanimously to elect Dr. Joseph R. Richardson as Pastor. Greater Faith began with a multitude of charter members and the blessings and prayers of many friends and well wishers alike.
The Greater Faith Baptist Church worshiped on Golden Gate Avenue for a time, and then moved to a new location on Guerrero Street, San Francisco. For a short period of time the church met in the home of Sister McCauley, and then moved to Page Street, also in San Francisco. Greater Faith then moved to the Booker T. Washington Community Center the Presidio.
In the 1990's Pastor Richardson’s health began to fail. Always remaining faithful to the vision given to him by God, and faithful to his commitment to the church family and God’s Word, Pastor Richardson served until November 8, 2000, when God called him from this life of labor to his reward in heaven.
Forsaking not the assembling of the saints, Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church continued to fellowship, pray, tithe, and serve as church body until the Lord sent, Reverend James Edward Lawson Jr., in 2003. Reverend J. E. Lawson Jr., is the second son of the late Dr. James Edward Lawson Sr., who was our pastor's pastor. We recognized that Reverend James E. Lawson Jr. demonstrated the same faithful servant hood as we had come to know under Pastor Richardson's leadership, which is also reflective of Reverend James E. Lawson Sr.
Being a dynamic speaker, and singer in his own right, Pastor J. E. Lawson Jr., is also an experienced pastor, a dynamic proclaimer of God’s Word, and anointed teacher. He has followed God’s lead from Oakland California to Bastrop, La, and back to Oakland, and ultimately accepted the call of Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church.
